The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady

The Mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. We aim to promote the social, educational, health, leadership, and character development of boys and girls during critical periods of their growth. What We Provide A safe place to learn and grow Ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals Life-enhancing programs and character development experiences Hope and opportunity From our mission to practices and programs, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady still makes it possible to open up a world of opportunities to youth for a nominal membership fee of $5.00 per year.  We are the largest agency provider of services to  the youth who need us most in Schenectady County serving over 3,300 members and reaching over 12,700 total youth in 2015.We serve youth ages 6 to 18 in our five clubhouses at MLK School, Mont Pleasant, Rotterdam, Steinmetz Homes and Yates Village. Other programs include Job Junction and six after-school programs at Schenectady High School, Mont Pleasant Middle School, Oneida, Central Park, Keane, and Lincoln. Our summer programs include Camp Lovejoy and the Summer Program at the Rotterdam Club (SPARC). This summer we will again be operating programs at Quackenbush Park, Hillhurst Park, Steinmetz Park, Woodlawn Park and Central Park, including three City swimming pools. We also teach a Career Exploration Workshop at Schenectady County Community College for all students in Summer Youth Employment.

Watervliet Civic Center Before & After School Program

The Watervliet Civic Center Before & After School Program is a school-age program that is licensed, registered and inspected by the NYS OCFS.  The program is offered to children enrolled in the Watervliet Elementary School.  The program is available to children in Pre-K & Kindergarten and children in grades 1-6.  The program is held at the Watervliet Elementary School (WES) and operates on the same schedule as WES.  Before School Program is held from 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM and the After School Program is conducted from 2:00 PM - 5:35 PM.  Some of the activities offered are gym games, outdoor play, building/enrichment, homework help, drama/play, arts & crafts & much more.

The Child Center of NY

Child Center 185 has a mission to strengthen children and families with skills, opportunities, and emotional support to build healthy, successful lives. SONYC at JHS 185 is staffed by youth work professionals, licensed teachers and other education professionals, and community members who are leaders in their fields, thereby providing local youth with relate-able role models. The program’s overarching goal is to promote positive social-emotional behaviors in young people’s attitudes toward themselves, the people around them, and their futures.

Red Hook Initiative (RHI) is a community-based nonprofit in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We believe that social change to overcome systemic inequities begins with empowered youth. In partnership with community adults, we nurture young people to be inspired, resilient, and healthy, and to envision themselves as co-creators of their lives, community and society. Since 2002, RHI has worked alongside residents of Red Hook to carry out resident-led solutions to local problems and to confront the impacts of racial inequity and decades of disinvestment on the our historically under-resourced community.

A day in the life of an Afterschool Senior Counselor The Afterschool Senior Counselor plays a critical role in the successful operation of the Afterschool program. The Afterschool Senior Counselor is responsible for providing a safe and positive environment for school age children and provide opportunities for learning, interaction and academic/personal growth. Afterschool Counselors plan and implement meaningful activities, lesson plans and special events that are structured, age-appropriate, fun, exciting, challenging, and values based in the areas of arts, STEM, character development, literacy, creative expression, community service, physical fitness and/or nutrition. The incumbent will also promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all staff and participants, and promotes a positive spirit. Qualifications   High school diploma or equivalent required; college credits preferred. Minimum of two years of experience working with youth under the age of 13 in a group setting. General knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. ​Knowledge of Access, Adobe PageMaker and Photoshop preferred. Key dates The afterschool season begins on September 19, 2022 and ends on June 16, 2023. Y Afterschool programs operate from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Monday - Friday and during public school breaks.
