  • Job Description:

    Overview: The Adult Literacy Program provides ESOL and counseling to immigrant adults in New York City. We serve over 400 adult immigrant students annually. We offer free 10-month long English language classes in the daytime, weekend, and evening schedules and support them in their roles as learners, teachers, parents, workers, and members of their communities. We build a foundation of English language and technology skills that allows our students to achieve their career and educational goals.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist Program Director with recruiting, interviewing, and hiring staff
    • Provide direct supervision of teachers, office assistants, and counselors
    • Attend organization-wide meetings and collaborate with other program directors
    • Handle all aspects of the student recruitment to enrollment process and train others to ensure enrollment outcomes are met
    • Lead program staff meetings with teachers and staff
    • Develop, coordinate and deliver outreach strategies, including community workshops, and promote program services
    • Develop individual education plans with program coordinator and make referrals to other training and education programs
    • Track progress of student achievement and work with staff to ensure that students’ goals are met
    • Attend NY State and NRS-mandated workshops, conferences, and meetings as required
    • Maintain attendance and performance records for students
    • Coordinate and plan staff meetings, resource fairs, and serve as a resource to program staff
    • Assist in development of program policies, curriculum and with grant writing and RFPs as needed
    • Complete student assessments, including Best Plus and other mandated tests
    • Train new staff on ASISTS, DYCD Connect, and other databases
    • Independently develop and maintain partnerships between programs and external program activities and develop and maintain relationships with outside groups including but not limited to, Citibank, New Museum, Chinatown Manpower and other groups in our Literacy Zones to enhance services
    • Represent program at network meetings and events
    • Work with Development office to create program material to be disseminated to the public
    • Work with staff to ensure that program complies with NYC, NRS and NY State requirements
    • Other relevant duties as required by program

     

  • Required Skills/Experience:

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
    • At least two years experience in ESOL program planning, teaching experience is a plus
    • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills required
    • Previous supervisory experience preferred
    • Bilingual English/Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, or Russian a plus
