  • Job Description:


    The Part-time Afterschool Teacher provides content-specific tutoring to middle and high school students enrolled in the EnCompass Future Ready Program. The staff members in this role promote academic achievement and social-emotional skill development through the utilization of multiple teaching methods, student engagement techniques; and a positive/productive classroom environment.



    • Manage individual and/or small group tutoring sessions in area of expertise.
    • Assist students with homework assignments, test preparation, and individual academic needs.
    • Work with students to help them understand and/or review key concepts, especially those learned in their classes.
    • Provide students with strategies applicable to content area that enable them to perform at high levels.
    • Help students develop study skills and organization techniques to improve their academic performance.
    • Create educational materials to support understanding and application of subject matter.
    • Provide positive and constructive feedback to encourage learning and promote progress.
    • Plan creative lessons aligned to the NYS Scope and Sequence to engage and educate students.
    • Promote high standards for academic success and behavior and continually encourage students to meet them.
    • Develop rapport with students and establish a welcoming, encouraging, and enriching learning environment.
    • Analyze and utilize student performance records (e.g., IEPs, 504 plans, progress reports, report cards, etc.) to inform and differentiate instruction.
    • Maintain a quiet, orderly, and safe workspace for students within the tutoring rooms.
    • Develop and participate in student enrichment activities.
    • Complete all attendance and data requirements.
    • Collaborate with Youth Navigators and College Readiness Coordinator to develop, implement and monitor individualized student academic plans.
    • Communicate student progress with families as needed.
    • Maximize student attendance and participation rates through positive relationships, effective communication methods, and incentives for students and families.
    • Additional responsibilities as needed



    • Educational background and experience related to content area

    • Effective communication skills, particularly as they relate to the development of trusting relationships with students and families
    • Ability to collaborate with others from diverse backgrounds
    • High standards of professionalism in all aspects of performance
    • Flexibility and creativity when addressing students’ academic needs
    • Familiarity with current research in social-emotional learning and educational practices
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Smartboard technology, and online platforms such as Zoom
  • Required Skills/Experience:


    • Minimum – Associate degree, Teaching Assistant Certification, or progress towards bachelor’s degree in content area
    • Preferred – Experience working with youth in an educational setting
