  • Job Description:

    Purpose:

    The Norman Howard School (NHS) 5/6 program is committed to the delivery of standards-based curricula that provide opportunities for hands-on learning and problem solving. The program uses the Rochester community as an experiential resource for learning and social skill development.  NHS seeks a 5/6 grade teacher who demonstrates these commitments and shows dedication to the academic and social success of our students with learning differences.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Provide standards-based curriculum using an integrated humanities approach.
    • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
    • Align classroom instruction with meaningful community-based expeditions.
    • Provide explicit process-based instruction in written expression.
    • Implement a variety of formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and achievement of instructional objectives.
    • Communicate with parents regarding student progress and achievement in accordance with school policy.
    • Function as an integral member of a grade level educational team.
    • Collaborate with School Counselor and educational team to reinforce application of positive social/emotional skills.
    • Adhere to school policies and procedures regarding student behavior and expectations within a PBIS framework.
    • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and school policy.
    • Monitor data-based IEP goal progress, when appropriate
    • Collaborate with community organizations to plan expeditions.
    • Fulfill Faculty Advisor role in accordance with school policy.
    • Perform supervisory duties, as assigned.
    • Participate in school activities and events, in accordance with school policy.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Must possess well-developed content knowledge.
    • Provide differentiated instruction based on student skill needs and abilities.
    • Deliver clear, cohesive instruction.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor student IEPs.
    • Provide functional behavioral thinking and multi-levels of behavioral support.
    • Provide explicit instruction for positive social/emotional skill development.
    • Effectively collaborate with Mentor Teacher.
    • Demonstrate strong organizational management and planning skills.
    • Possess clear written communication skills
    • Maintain professional competence and skills through in-service education, consultation with administration and colleagues, independent study and self-selected professional growth activities.
    • Maintain certification requirements in accordance with New York State regulations.
  • Required Skills/Experience:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor or Master of Education with New York State initial or professional certification for Students with Disabilities, grades K – 6.
    • Prior experience teaching students with learning disabilities preferred.
    • Able to work some flexible hours to accommodate parent/guardian meetings, school activities, and other mandated events/meetings.
    • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license and be willing & able to transfer students in school vans.
