    Overview

    The Kew-Forest School, a co-educational independent day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hill, New York serves a diverse population of approximately 215 students in Preschool (3-year-olds) through Grade 12. Kew-Forest is the longest-serving college preparatory school in Queens. Our community nurtures lifelong learners, our educators inspire young people, and our students support each other.

    To support our community’s need for a safe and engaging end to the school day, we offer our Afterschool Care Program (“Afterschool”) for children in Pre-K through Grade 6. Designed with our Kew-Forest families in mind, the program provides a secure and nurturing environment where children can grow socially, physically, emotionally, and academically after school.

    The Afterschool Program offers optional mini-course activities, such as Chess, Legos, Drama, and more. Early drop off (Morning Care) is also available with supervised play in the gym for parents who need to drop off their child before the school day begins.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide direct supervision and academic support to students in a safe, inclusive, and emotionally supportive environment.
    • Facilitate Morning Care (7:30 am – 8:00 am) and Afterschool Program activities (including assisting with school dismissal procedures and escorting students to/from Afterschool/Mini-Course Activities.
    • Support students with homework help, maintaining a productive learning environment.
    • Engage children in structured and free-play activities (e.g., board games, group play).
    • Supervise Morning Care from 7:30 am to 8:00 am and escort students to classrooms at the start of the school day.
    • Uphold behavioral expectations with professionalism and flexibility.
    • Maintain accurate student attendance logs.
    • Foster positive relationships with staff, parents, and students, representing Kew-Forest professionally.
    • Attend staff meetings as required.
    • Other duties, as necessary.

    Required Skills and Experience

    • High School Diploma or equivalent experience.
    • 2+ years’ of experience in an afterschool program, childcare, or other related field.
    • Demonstrated ability to engage youth in recreational, artistic, and educational activities.
    • Strong understanding of group/behavior management and positive youth development principles.
    • Passion for creating high-quality, enriching experiences for children in Grades K-5.
    • Professional, adaptable, and team-oriented with the ability to multitask effectively.
    • Self-motivated with a proven ability to work effectively under pressure.
    • Excellent verbal/written communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to enforce program policies while maintaining a supportive environment.
    • Flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced setting.

    Hours and Compensation: 

    • Part-time Position
      • Morning Care   Monday-Friday   7:30 am to 8:00 am
      • Afterschool      Monday-Friday    3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
      • Occasional Full Days                      8:00 am to 6:00 pm
    • Full week commitment is preferred, but flexible arrangements may be considered.
    • $20.00 per hour
    • Reports to the Director of Auxiliary and Summer Programs
