    Organization Overview

     

    The New York State Network for Youth Success (the Network) is a statewide organization dedicated to strengthening the capacity and commitment of communities, programs, and professionals to increase access to high-quality programs and services beyond the traditional classroom. For nearly three decades, the Network has served a critical role to advance equitable expanded learning ecosystems throughout New York  state. We work to ensure high-quality afterschool and summer programs are available so all of New York’s youth—and especially low-income youth and youth of color—can have the opportunities they deserve to thrive. The Network is dedicated to building responsive community systems to support quality afterschool, youth development, and summer programs for New York’s youth.

     

     

    Position Description

     

    The Network for Youth Success is seeking a driven candidate with a dedicated interest in youth development and STEAM education for a full time staff position starting in late 2022 under the supervision of the Professional Development Director with guidance from the Regional Network Director and CEO. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) is the leading growing sector of the economy; however, students’ opportunities to learn and experience STEAM aren’t equitable.  Afterschool programs provide an excellent venue for students to explore STEAM concepts and learn STEAM skills in a way that there isn’t always time for in the standard-driven school day. 

    The purpose of this position is to support afterschool programs in New York State in creating high-quality STEAM experiences for the youth they serve. This will involve working with, developing, and facilitating STEAM partnerships; providing training on STEAM practices and curricula; disseminating STEAM resources; and collecting data on STEAM in afterschool programs. 

    Candidates must be based in the 9-county region (Monroe, Niagara, Erie, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua), and will work primarily work from home/home office/remotely. .This position will focus 50% on 9 Western New York Counties, and the other 50% will be focused on the Rest of State. Travel to in person meetings, site visits, and events will be required. Most travel will be local, with occasional travel to the main office in Troy, NY as well as travel to national conferences. The STEAM Coordinator will be part of the Professional Development Department and report to the Professional Development Director. This position will work closely with the Western New York Regional Office Director. 

    Note: This position will require visits to schools and afterschool programs as public health guidelines allow. Candidate will need to meet all legal requirements for entering these establishments, which could include fingerprinting and background checks per OCFS regulations.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Deliver and coordinate professional development on STEAM topics such as selecting equity-based curricula, working with outside experts and partners, and facilitating STEAM learning
    • Support the work of the Network’s STEAM grants and initiatives
      • Promote activities to engage more youth in engineering practices
      • Strengthen pathways to economic mobility through technical assistance
      • Amplify youth Voices in STEM across New York with Flight Crew youth from the Western region and New York State
      • Expand access to STEM in rural and under-resourced urban areas of New York
    • Support the Network’s policy team in their advocacy efforts around STEAM funding and supports
    • Support the work of the NYS Girls Collaborative Project
      • Recruitment, onboarding, and support of the Leadership Team and Champions board in connection with the volunteers and Professional Development Director. 
    • Identify resources that can be recruited for STEAM program support
    • Map where existing STEAM afterschool programs are located and identify where more opportunities are needed
    • Work with afterschool programs and community-based organizations to develop a strategy to successfully engage potential STEAM-rich organizations and businesses to increase access to STEAM educational opportunities
    • Identify and initiate outreach to trainers that can lead workshops for STEAM providers to increase their program quality
    • Maintain STEAM dedicated space on website for resource as well as STEAM newsletter dissemination
    • Develop a STEAM track at each annual statewide conference
    • Provide mentoring and guidance for regional networks around STEAM programming
    • Create and distribute data reports for specific stakeholders and partners for the purpose of accountability, quality, progress and need
    • Other duties as assigned

    Salary and Benefits:

    This is a full-time position that is eligible for full employment benefits: including medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, four weeks of annual paid time off, sabbatical leave, up to 3% matching for simple IRA retirement, and an employee assistance program. Network employees have the opportunity to be flexible with their schedules, work remotely as needed, and ask for other support in creating an approach to work-life balance that meets their needs.

     

    Base salary range $40,000-$52,000 annually. Salary commensurate on experience. 

     

    Location

    This position is remote, however, the applicant must reside in one of the 9 WNY counties: Niagara, Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming, Genesee, Orleans, or Monroe County.

  • Required Skills/Experience:

    Qualifications

    • Experience in leading training and facilitation of learning events (workshops, trainings, conference presentations, etc.)
    • Experience in the afterschool, out-of-school time, education, and/or the youth development field
    • Experience with STEAM education in an informal or formal capacity
    • Strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for working with a broad cross-section of stakeholders and ability to motivate coalitions while helping move their work forward are critical
    • Strong writing and public speaking skills
    • Ability to travel across the state as needed
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to provide positive and inspirational leadership
    • Excellent technology skills and working knowledge of Google Suite
    • Ability to objectively observe, coach, and mentor peers
    • Ability to work independently on assigned projects and tasks
    • Ability to work productively in a home office environment
    • Knowledge of equity and social justice principles and practices
    • A personal commitment to racial justice, equity, and supporting leaders dedicated to positive social change

     

    Strong Candidates will exhibit any/all of the following skills and experience:

    • 2+ years of experience in leading trainings and workshops
    • 2+ years of experience facilitating meetings and learning events (such as trainings and workshops)
    • Meet the qualifications to obtain or already hold a TTAP PDS credential from New York AEYC
    • Experience working within a nonprofit environment
    • Familiarity with grant writing
