  • Job Description:

    Under the direction of the site supervisor, the counselor is responsible for assisting with the planning, development, and implementation of all Pre-K and school-age childcare activities.

    • Serve as a positive role model for program children.
    • Greets and welcomes children and parents in a warm and friendly manner.
    • plan and implement age-appropriate activities assigned by the site supervisor.
    • Supervise and interact with children during free play time, snacks and activities.
    • Display appropriate behavior around children, parents, and staff.
    • Provide leadership to children engaged in activities.
    • Assist in preparation and implementation of all activities.
    • Work with children in small groups with age-appropriate activities.
    • Assist in maintaining the health, safety, and cleanliness of the program site.
    • Help prepare and serve snacks.
    • Develop positive relationships with program parents.
    • Maintain accurate head counts at all times.
    • Encourage individual children to develop physical, cognitive, artistic, and social skills.
    • Participate in scheduled staff meeting, trainings, and planning sessions.
    • Work extra hours in an emergency situation.
    • Report all relevant information regarding the site to the site supervisor.
    • Adhere to rules of the Watervliet Civic Center, NYS OCFS and the Watervliet City School District.
  • Required Skills/Experience:
    • Must have knowledge of child development.
    • Possess good communication skills.
    • Good judgement.
    • Solid work ethic.
    • Ability to follow directions.
    • While performing this job, the individual must be prepared to assist in general maintenance duties.  The employee must have the ability to perform duties effectively in a sometimes-distracting work place.
    • Submission of NYS medical statement, documenting physician clearance to work with children as well as a TB test which meets the health and social service requirement.
    • Clearance from criminal background check.
    • Complete required training each year as provided by NYS OCFS.
