Job Description:

The YMCA of Greater New York reaches half a million New Yorkers through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  The West Side YMCA is seeking qualified individuals who will be responsible for the organization and delivery of quality programs, catering to teens. The Advisor will monitor and supervise all teen services and programs, including service learning, community development, leadership, college readiness and outreach.  In addition, s/he will be responsible for advertising and recruiting participants, ensuring proper documentation, teen reports, and meeting program goals.


  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants in the program, by providing close supervision of all activities.
  • Plan, prepare and create lesson plans for Teens Take the City, Junior Knicks, Leaders Club and Teen Center.
  • Facilitate and implement Teens Take the City, Leaders Club and Teen Center program curricula.
  • Work with the Teen Coordinator to organize, prepare and submit teen quarterly reports, in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that all participants sign in and sign out, on a daily basis.
  • Provide support with teen registration and audit compliance.
  • Ensure return on surveys, applications and other documentation, as needed.
  • Develop positive relationships with the participants, their friends and family members.
  • Instruct and mentor teen participants.
  • Adhere to all Department of Health, Department of Youth and Community Development and YMCA of Greater New York standards.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with professional staff and other departments.
  • Data entry.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of program space during all activities.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate actions for emergency situations on-site & during field trips.
  • Work with staff to implement recreational and academic teen programs.
  • Create an environment that is diverse, culturally sensitive and relevant to the needs of teens.
  • Assist in fund development endeavors for the Youth & Family Department.
  • Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions and special events.
  • Bachelor’s degree or working towards degree.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with youth and teens.
  • Experience teaching and facilitating trainings on issues related to teens.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to manage adolescent behavior with respect, maturity, compassion and encouragement.
  • General knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Access, Adobe PageMaker and Photoshop preferred.
