    Schedule: Monday – Friday 20-25 hours per a week; some evenings and/or weekends maybe required

    Work location: Queens Technical High School and/or Beacon 343, IS 5, and PS 19

    All schools are based in Sunnyside, Queens, or surrounding neighborhoods.

    Organizational Description:
    Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a multi-service, community-based organization providing a broad range of services to approximately 16,000 people each year. Our services include pre-kindergarten and after school programs; college prep and career programs for teens and young adults; supports for immigrants; a vibrant senior center, dedicated home care services, support and assistance for family caregivers, and social adult day program for people with cognitive and physical impairments.

    Position overview:

    The College Advisor will work closely with high school juniors and seniors to support their college application process. This position will be responsible for providing comprehensive college-readiness support to students and families. They will provide students and families with guidance in the college planning, admission, and financial aid processes. The college advisor will help high school students identify college goals, support them in the taking steps, and assist their parents in understanding the college application process.

    Responsibilities:

    • Build and sustain a culture of college and career knowledge.
    • Work with high school students in grades 9th-12th grades on college preparedness.
    • Develop and facilitate workshops and activities to expose and prepare participants for college.
    • Assist with the college application process for college-bound participants.
    • Lead workshops, events and trips that will support, inspire, and inform participants about the skills needed to pursue higher education and other opportunities.
    • Connect participants with relevant resources important for postsecondary success (SAT courses, college prep mentors, additional tutoring, school/placement visits, etc.).
    • Lead financial aid, FAFSA workshops; assist students and parents with navigating the financial aid/FAFSA process)
    • Coordinate with the Director to provide differentiated college prep support to participants according to their individual plans, in small group and one-on-one settings.
    • Develop interactive lessons that will assist youth to develop academic techniques: goal setting, study skills, organization skills, time management
    • Closely working with students’ guidance counselors or school staff for additional assistance.
    • Ability to maintain a welcoming and effective environment for all participants.
    • Outreach to various program participants and their families via telephone and e-mail regarding college preparedness and program attendance.
    • Ability to provide workshops, instruction, and classes online by virtual platforms
    • Develop meaningful relationships, track performance measures, and update participant files regularly.
    • Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, and outside events.
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

    Qualifications

    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Proof of vaccination may be required by the start of the program year
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or some college with at least two years of relevant work experience
    • Experience working with high school students or academic programs.
    • Experience working in college readiness programming preferred
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to be proactive and work independently and collaboratively.
    • High motivation and willingness to work as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth
    • Strong leadership, mentoring and team-building skills
    • Bi-lingual (Spanish preferred) a plus
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with youth
    • Excellent punctuality, attendance, and reliability is a must.
    • Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), Google Suite/Office 365, and online platforms such as Google Classroom and Zoom
