Job Description:

Homes for the Homeless (HFH) provides transitional housing to homeless families with children in New York City. At our American Family Inns, families receive the education, job training, and support services necessary to maintain permanent housing and become self-sufficient.

 

HFH s is seeking an Education Programs Coordinator to coordinate after school programs at a large family homeless shelter in the South Bronx.  Salary in the mid to high 30s with excellent benefits. 

 

Position Summary

The Education Program Coordinator is a combined position including program development, administrative responsibilities and staff supervision. The Coordinator will be involved in all aspects of program delivery from recruiting and enrollment through assessment.

 

Major duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Program development, including curriculum, staffing and operational aspects, of two after school programs.
  • Participating in all education programs meetings, activities, and professional development.  Substituting in the classroom as necessary. 
  • Facilitating parent orientations, encouraging parental involvement and fostering strong relationships with parents.
  • Coordinating with agency directors to meet the needs of all family participants.
  • Identifying and developing partnerships with local schools and other community-based organizations.
  • Supervision of staff involved in the after school programs.
  • Coordinating purchases and field trips for program activities.
  • Reporting attendance, student achievement and outcomes, and other program activities to funding sources and within the agency.

Required Skills/Experience:

 

Desired Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will have five or more years experience in the education field working with a diverse population, excellent written and verbal communication skills and relationship-building skills, and demonstrated skills in program management. He or she will have an excellent understanding of human development and appropriate pedagogy for child and adult learners. He or she will be a team player with the desire to work with other agency programs, both educational and social, to maximize the impact upon participating families. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver and will take initiative to develop new class materials, programs, educational themes, and community partnerships. He or she will manage their time effectively, be attentive to details, and be dedicated to offering exceptional educational opportunities to learners with a variety of needs.

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. Master’s Degree strongly recommended.
  • Five or more years experience in education, especially with children and diverse populations.
  • Program and staff management experience in an educational setting.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Spanish speaking is a plus.
