Job Description:

Edible Schoolyard NYC partners with public schools to build gardens and kitchen classrooms where children can engage in hands-on learning. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and environment required to make healthier choices and change the way they eat…for life.

The Lead Kitchen Classroom Teacher conducts regular cooking/nutrition education classes for students grade K-8, and guides a staff and volunteer team in the maintenance and operation of a productive culinary classroom. The position reports to the Program Director and Director of Education of Edible Schoolyard NYC.

Edible Schoolyard NYC (ESYNYC) partners with public schools to build gardens and kitchen classrooms where children can engage in hands-on learning. The objective is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and environment required to change the way they eat for life.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Conduct daily kitchen/nutrition education classes appropriate to an ethnically diverse, urban K-8 student population.
  • Help the Director of Education continue to adapt and modify curriculum.
  • Follow existing kitchen classroom rituals and routines, adapting and modifying as necessary.
  • Model respect and curiosity for learning. Encourage students' interests and talents.
  • Create and Lead professional development trainings in collaboration with the Director of Education to help educators throughout the area learn how to bring "edible education" to their own school sites.


  • Ensure that ingredients are properly prepped for classes based on use in recipe and age-appropriateness of class.
  • Maintain equipment, paper goods, cleaning supplies and ingredients for all classes.
  • Ensure that all necessary ingredients are purchased in a timely fashion for classes.
  • Code receipts and maintain budget for all cooking classes.
  • Ensure that all ingredients are proper handled and stored for food safety.
  • Ensure that daily kitchen maintenance and special cleaning projects are complete and participate in those tasks as time and priorities allow.
  • Maintain teaching kitchen facilities and equipment in good working order.
  • Provide training for all teaching kitchen staff to ensure proper food safety and sanitation.
  • Support all culinary-related events and activities.


  • Create and implement extracurricular activities including family cooking nights and weekly after school classes. Participate in extracurricular garden events.
  • Work closely with leadership team in program evaluation efforts.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the ESYNYC kitchen classroom budget and manage spending to that budget.
  • Develop meaningful relationships with classroom teachers that will enhance the opportunities for teachers to feel engaged in kitchen classes
  • Remain engaged, knowledgeable, and up to date about the garden and know what plants are ready to harvest at any given time throughout the year.
  • Work in tandem with Edible Schoolyard NYC's Garden Teachers and Manager to maximize the connection between kitchen and garden activities, and to ensure that harvested food is put to good use.
  • Work with Edible Schoolyard NYC's Director of Education to schedule kitchen class observations and feedback sessions.
  • Keep updated archive of lesson plans, class materials, feedback forms, and other kitchen class documentation.
  • Stay informed of school events and activities. Be an active presence in the school community and attend school meetings and events as appropriate.
  • Actively support a culture of wellness at school site
  • Represent Edible Schoolyard NYC to the wider community through public speaking and attendance at and participation in related meetings or conferences.
  • Participate in Edible Schoolyard NYC staff meetings, staff development days and program development meetings.
  • Participate in Edible Schoolyard NYC events and community outreach efforts.
  • Directly Supervise Assistant Kitchen Classroom Teacher: manage hours and schedule, maintain effective communication, provide feedback in clear and consistent manner.
  • Lead cooking demonstrations at festivals or other public events when appropriate to promote Edible Schoolyard and food education throughout the city.
  • Welcome visitors to the program and be prepared to be observed teaching class.
  • Ensure an engaging and rewarding experience for volunteers. Orient volunteers to the kitchen and kitchen-related responsibilities.


  • Bachelors degree required. Masters in Nutrition Education preferred. Teacher certificate preferred.
  • Culinary Certification or extensive culinary experience required.
  • Experience running a kitchen, overseeing staff, and creating recipes preferred.
  • Experience teaching elementary aged students required.
  • Some lesson planning experience required.
  • Experience teaching cooking classes strongly preferred.
  • Possession of a valid New York State driver's license and a clean driving record.

  • Ability to work with frequent interruption and to simultaneously supervise a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to stand, reach, and bend. Mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects, which may be approximately 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to smell, taste and feel garden produce, to help determine quality of raw food.
  • May be required to work around loud noise.
  • Willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends/special events when needed.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in ESYNYC's mission.
  • Exhibit a creative, collegial, and collaborative work style with the ability to work individually and as part of a team with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, problem solve and be flexible in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial work environment.

Wages: Commensurate with experience. This position will be based at our Showcase School in East Harlem.
