 OVERVIEW OF NEW SETTLEMENT APARTMENTS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES:

New Settlement Apartments is a not-for-profit housing & community service organization, located in the southwest Bronx, with a 30 year track record of active commitment to neighborhood revitalization and community development- including working toward excellence in community public schools. An integral part of the progressive housing philosophy embraced by New Settlement is that ‘housing is not just bricks and mortar’. Our mission is not only to rebuild and maintain a sizeable portion of the housing stock in this neighborhood, but also to support the rebuilding of its social capital. New Settlement currently provides year-round educational, cultural and recreational programs and social services to 13,500 youth and adults who live in the surrounding area.

 

DESCRIPTION OF BRONX HELPERS PROGRAM: With the motto, “Working for the Community to Better Our Lives,” the Bronx Helpers program provides summer enrichment program to 54 youth (6th-8th graders).The program is supported by Department of Youth and Community Development SONYC which support activities such as literacy, math, science, engineering, cultural enrichment, leadership and community service, dance, healthy living, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, trips in New York City and much more during summer and school year.

 

Bronx Helpers identify and learn about issues affecting our community and participate in youth led social justice service projects that contribute to positive change. Program themes have included “Pedestrian Safety”, “Environmental Justice” and “Fighting Hunger.”

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Group Worker chaperones a group of 18-25 participants to different locations New York City while following the program’s policies and procedures in a pro-active manner and keeping the safety of the children the primary focus. The Group Worker works closely with Group Leader and Counselors in Training in carrying out daily/weekly goals. While program is in session, we balance academic enrichment and leadership development through hand-on projects and theme-based learning that encourages critical thinking and creativity.

Required Skills/Experience:

 Experience Required: Applicants must have experience working with youth. Knowledge of and interest in the arts, science, engineering, mathematics, healthy living and physical education required.  Applicants must have experience developing and leading middle-school level activities for children; have strong planning and organizational skills; team leadership, behavioral management, and conflict resolution skills; have the ability to facilitate daily lesson plans and activities. Teamwork and hands-on teaching ability is a must.

 

Education & Skills Required: Education & Skills Required: High School Graduate and/or College student. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus. In order to work with the children, applicants must undergo a background check, in accordance with local regulations. Must be a dynamic, flexible, upbeat, with a strong desire to work with children, willingness to learn and adapt to an established program culture, a good sense of humor, responsible, dependable and hands-on individual. Knowledge of e-mail correspondence. Excellent written and oral skills required. The position requires great people skills and ability to meet competing demands in a busy work environment. Physical effort is generally required for work performance in the classrooms and out in the field; may be required to lift items and spend several hours standing and walking when out in the field.

 

Salary and Benefits Offered:

Part-time, temporary position July 8th –August 2nd (32.5 hours weekly) Hourly rate: $15.00. 

 

Availability: Monday- Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Planning time hours are flexible.
