Job Description:

University Settlement owns and operates the 42,000 square-foot Houston Street Center in a unique partnership with the Chinatown YMCA.  The Group Leader is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing grade-/skill-specific dynamic curricula in arts and leadership as well as implementing academic enrichment and other programs for SONYC STRIDE After-School Program for Middle School youth.  The Group Leader is also responsible for engaging and supervising youth, assisting with program policies and procedures, and supporting the daily operations of the SONYC STRIDE After-School Program for Middle School youth.

  • Design, develop, and implement grade-specific programming and curricula for arts, culture, leadership and academic enrichment. 
  • Facilitate, lead and coordinate activities. 
  • Build strong and positive relationships with young people in the SONYC STRIDE Program
  • Collaborate with other SONYC STRIDE staff to create and implement curriculum to build arts and interpersonal skills amongst youth 
  • Design and implement arts assessment and evaluation tools
  • Plan and coordinate workshops, activities, and special events.
  • Facilitate youth involvement in the planning and implementation of special projects and special events
  • Supervise youth in the space at all times
  • Update Director regularly regarding progress of youth
  • Collect and maintain comprehensive, up-to-date, and accurate records, including attendance
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Required Skills/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or HSE required; Bachelor’s degree in arts, education, counseling or related field preferred 
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • At least 2 years previous experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong background in program development, arts, curriculum design, and lesson plan writing.
  • Sensitivity to multi-cultural issues
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal skills
  • Self-directed and able to work as part of a team
  • Creativity, flexibility, and commitment 
  • Bi-lingual Cantonese or Spanish a plus
