Flatbush Development Corporation (FDC) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Education Specialist for their school-based afterschool programs at two elementary schools located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. These programs are free for participants and funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). The Education Specialist is responsible for guiding and supporting the afterschool staff and ensuring program curriculum activities stimulate participation, and are entertaining, interactive, and engaging.
This is a full-time position working weekdays from 10:00am - 6:00pm with mornings at the FDC office and afternoons at the school sites.
- Identify and develop age-appropriate curriculum that supports and extends the school day curriculum, and is appropriate for the afterschool setting.
- Review lesson plans submitted by group leaders and activity specialists, providing suggestions on how to strengthen the activities or connect them to the school day curricula.
- Regularly observe activities at the sites and provide coaching support to group leaders based on those observations.
- Consult with site-based Program Directors and the Youth Director to plan professional development based on your needs assessment and DYCD requirements,
- Facilitate professional development trainings and workshops for frontline staff
- Alert site-based Program Directors to any staff who are not meeting expectations.
- Build productive relationships with FDC staff and school’s administrative team, including but not limited to - principal, assistant principal, literacy and math coaches, teachers, PTA president and parent coordinator.
- Perform any other program, organizational, administrative, ad hoc or occupational duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, child development, physical education, fine arts or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Teaching credential or teaching experience.
- Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development, and implementation of structured programming for students in elementary or middle school.
- Minimum two years of experience working with children up to age 13 in a supervisory role; or, two years of child care credentials for children up to age 13, plus one year in a supervisory role.
- Some experience coaching teachers and/or facilitators preferred.
- Experience in working within ethnically diverse populations.
- Knowledge of NYS learning standards, such as the CCLS and NGSS.
- Very strong critical thinking, written, and verbal skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
