Job Description:

The YMCA of Greater New York reaches half a million New Yorkers through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  The McBurney YMCA is seeking a Day Camp Activity Specialist who, under the supervision of the Camp Director, will play a critical role in providing academic enhancement and enrichment in the Summer Day Camp program. The Day Camp Activity Specialist will be responsible for providing a safe and positive environment for school-aged children, to provide opportunities for learning, interaction, and academic/ personal growth. Specifically, the Day Camp Activity Specialist will prepare and provide age-appropriate Basketball instruction for Ages 7-12 in Summer Day Camp.

 

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants in the program by providing appropriate supervision at all times.
  • Understand, maintain, and ensure that participants follow Risk Management and safety procedures.
  • Plan and implement meaningful activities and special events that are structured, age-appropriate, fun, age-appropriate, exciting, challenging, and values based in the area of Basketball.
  • Teach participants the fundamentals of Basketball, including activities that build their level of skill and confidence.
  • Perform specific scheduled assignments, including but not limited to: swimming, arrival and/or departure, and lunch duty.
  • Support the planning and implementation of all camp activities, including but not limited to summer learning initiatives, field trips, in-camp events and culminating performances.
  • Coordinate and present a culminating performance at the end of the program cycle, if applicable.
  • Work cooperatively with Afterschool Counselors, professional staff, teachers, and other program and school staff.
  • Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all participants.
  • Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation (attendance, sign in/out forms, behavior reports, incident reports, and accident reports, as appropriate).
  • Serve as a positive role model for participants.
  • Work with the Day Camp Director to secure and maintain all equipment or supplies needed for Basketball.
  • Understand and communicate the YMCA’s core values and the goals of the Summer Day Camp Program to participants and care givers.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and guardians through regular communication about their child’s strengths and areas of growth.
  • Prepare the learning environment, lessons, and necessary supplies for Basketball activities.
  • Attend all required pre-camp trainings.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
  • Adhere to all Department of Health, YMCA of Greater New York, and funder standards, expectations, and regulations.
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.  College credits and formal education in Athletics preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with youth, specifically in the sport of basketball.
  • Formal certification related to Basketball preferred.
  • General knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Access, Adobe PageMaker and Photoshop preferred.
