Organization Overview:

Since 1893, Henry Street has delivered the most effective, compassionate and comprehensive services possible to residents of the Lower East Side.  As a multifaceted not-for-profit, Henry Street provides innovative social services, arts programs and healthcare services from 17 locations throughout the Lower East Side. Building upon its legacy for innovation and effective programming, Henry Street has grown to offer more than 50 different programs, currently making it one of the most comprehensive settlement house in New York City, as well as one of the City’s largest social service agencies. Henry Street is governed by a 45-member Board of Directors and is supported by government grants and contracts, as well as foundation, corporate and individual support.

Education and Employment Services is an 8.2 million dollar division serving about 9000 people each year through a continuum of services from Early Childhood Education through Adult Workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. Education Services include an Early Learn Program, After School Programs (6 sites), 4 Day Camps, Youth Recreation, High School Initiatives including 2 Community Schools, and our Expanded Horizons College Success Program. Programming takes place within 3 community center sites and multiple school-based programs. Employment Services include walk-in employment services, employment services for a public housing population, ESL job readiness training, and employment services for youth including SYEP and Young Adult Internship and Adult Literacy Programs. This position is within our After School & Camp Services department, reporting to the Director of After School & Camp Services, supporting the After School & Camp Service programming. 


              Assist program staff with developing behavior management plans that supports student retention and daily attendance.

              Facilitate individual and small group counseling sessions across program sites as needed.

              Review participants IEPs and support staff in implementing programming for these participants.

              Research and organize SEL training opportunities for staff.

              Develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate instructional systems.

              Establish and maintain a daily schedule of program visits and participant follow-ups.

              Provide resources to families seeking additional support. 

              Report behavior changes and system modifications to appropriate staff. 

              Maintain documentation of evaluations, ongoing instructional programs, student progress and communications.

              Prepare reports and collect data as requested by the Director and required by partnership, private, or public funders.

              Attend related meetings relevant to program and students.

              Consult counselors, administrators, and co-workers regarding SEL programs.

              Present and interpret program to a variety of audiences in a variety of settings, if necessary.

              Consult with school administration to develop and maintain student behavior plans.

              Provide a comfortable and supportive learning environment for all participants.

              Adhere to program curriculum.

              Attend meetings and participate in 15 hours of in-service training yearly.

              Participate in the supervision/evaluation process.

              Other related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Required Skills/Experience:


·         Bachelor’s Degree in a social service, social work, or education field required; Master’s Degree preferred.

·         Prior teaching, counselling, or social Work experience with children required.

·         Experience reviewing IEP’s and developing behavior management interventions and/or systems.

·         Minimum of two (2) years experience working with children from diverse backgrounds.

·         Strong understanding of Social and Emotional Learning and industry trends.

·         Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.

·         Computer literate, including experience with all Microsoft Office software packages and Google Suite.
